Original Club Shirt
Manchester United’s original name was Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club. The club was founded in 1878. The original kits, or shirts, were a combination of yellow and green half-stitched shirts.
The shirts were similar to jockey silks. This color scheme was worn from 1878 to 1892
A Second Shirt
Newton Heath also used a red and white quartered shirt. This shirt was used from 1892 through 1894. The club also used blue shorts with a red and white quartered shirt.
The Third Shirt
A plain white shirt was worn from 1896 to 1902. However, this would all change in 1902 when the club changed its name to Manchester United from Newton Heath.
First Manchester United Home Shirt
After the name change to Manchester United in 1902, the club altered their shirt, changing to red shirts. The shorts were white and the socks were black. This shirt, or kit, would become Manchester United’s home shirt. The basic color pattern of red, white, and black has been used for the home soccer kit ever since.
First Manchester United Away Shirt
The away shirt is all-white. Black shorts with white socks are worn.
Manchester United experimented with the away shirt since its inception in 1902. During the 1995-96 season Man U decided to change the away shirt to all-grey. Manchester United lost all its away matches, so this experiment was canned at season’s end.

Manchester United used the all-black shirt in 1994 and 2003 seasons.

A third variation was tried in 2000 when Manchester United wore an all-blue shirt.
This shirt was to worn to pay homage to the 1968 club that won The European Championship. This shirt is rarely used.
The Modern Manchester United Shirt
The current home shirt is red with a vertical white stripe on the reverse. A patch with the words “Red Devils” on a picture of the club’s mascot, a devil, is sewn on the bottom left of the shirt.

The away shirt is white with blue piping on the edges. The shirt has red trim on the neck. The club emblem is on the left breast of the shirt.
