Fix Windows Movie Maker When It Freezes

Windows Movie Maker is a free video editing software program that comes installed on most PC computers. As with any software program you may experience some glitches. For example, if you have a problem with Movie Maker freezing up on you, here’s a do-it-yourself tip that may resolve the problem.

Instructions

Step 1

OPEN Windows Movie Maker.
Step 2

CLICK Tools. It’s located on the very top of the program screen. When you click Tools a drop down menu appears.
Step 3

SELECT options. A new window opens up. Click on the Compatibility tab. You may see several video filters listed. These filters are associated with other software programs that may be conflicting with Movie Maker.
Step 4

DESELECT the filters that end in .ax. When you hover over each filter with your cursor it will show you which filters end in .ax.
Step 5

CLICK Close. If there was any conflict between Movie Maker and the filters you disabled, then this should resolve the problem. Movie Maker should now work without freezing up.

Tips & Warnings

The instructions are based on my usage of Windows XP and Windows Movie Maker 2.1.
You can always restore your filter settings. Just click Restore All Defaults under Tools/Options/Compatibility.
Although the filters are disabled in Movie Maker other video programs on your computer should not be affected.
